The term pigmentation directly relates to the colouring of your skin, so people who are affected by a skin pigmentation disorder may see inconsistencies in the colour of their skin or patches of skin that are a different colour. Your skin gets its colour from a pigment called melanin, which is created by specific cells in your skin. When these cells become unhealthy or damaged in any way, it affects melanin production and causes skin pigmentation issues.

If your body creates too much melanin, your skin becomes darker. This is known as hyperpigmentation. Unlike other conditions such as rosacea, skin pigmentation is harmless and does not cause any discomfort, swelling or pain. However, it can have an effect on your confidence and a big impact on your mental health.

Different Forms of Pigmentation

Melasma – this is believed to be caused by hormonal changes and may develop during pregnancy.

Sunspots – sunspots can occur with excess sun exposure over time. These are also called liver spots or solar lentigines.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – this happens as a result of inflammation or injury to the skin. Acne is a very common cause of this.

Freckles – freckles are a harmless byproduct of melanin overproduction and can be caused by sun exposure or your genetic makeup.

Birthmarks – pigmented birthmarks aren't usually treated and some may go away by themselves.

What Triggers Pigmentation?

Certain medical conditions or medications can trigger skin pigmentation. Some forms of the condition are naturally occurring and will be part of your genetic makeup. For example, you are usually born with birthmarks and/or freckles, it is not something that is triggered.

External triggers of pigmentation can include sun exposure, age, hormonal influences, skin injuries, and inflammation.

Pigmentation Treatments at Revolution Aesthetics

The ZO hyperpigmentation regimen focuses on brightening, evening and exfoliating the skin to help reduce pigmentation in the top layers of the skin, without causing further inflammation, dryness or discomfort, which can be common side effects of strong exfoliants. The ZO regimen contains a variety of gentle chemical exfoliants, vitamins (including vitamin C to even skin tone), retinols and ascorbic acid to create genuinely effective results without damaging the skin. Since the melanocytes (the cells that produce pigment in our skin) are overactive in cases of pigmentation issues (particularly in darker skin tones), a high-quality, high-level SPF is crucial as sun damage can actually increase melanocyte activity and cause pigmentation to worsen.

To find out more about the ZO skincare regimens we offer or any of the other skincare treatments at Revolution Aesthetics, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our experienced team. We’ll be happy to talk to you about your skincare needs and get you on track to the best version of yourself.
