At Revolution Aesthetics, our experienced team have helped many individuals with skin concerns over the years. Many of these concerns relate to ageing, whether that be intrinsic ageing or extrinsic ageing. These concerns can vary, but upper lip lines are one of the most popular conditions and signs that are associated with ageing. Here’s everything you need to know about upper lip wrinkles.
What are upper lip lines?
Upper lip lines are usually one of the first types of wrinkles to develop, as the skin starts to age. Repetitive movements are one of the main causes of upper lip wrinkles. This repeated muscle movement in the area can create permanent lines, which become deep wrinkles over time.
As we get older, we produce less collagen, which keeps the skin firm and plump. Because this part of the skin is much thinner than others, we naturally have less collagen in this area anyway. Because of this, lip lines usually develop earlier than other types of fine lines and wrinkles. Lip lines are commonly associated with smoking - nicotine narrows the blood vessels and reduces the oxygen that reaches skin cells - but other extrinsic factors can also increase the risk of developing these wrinkles prematurely. This includes sun damage caused by exposure to UV radiation - which is one of the biggest culprits of ageing - as well as stress, dehydration and poor nutrition.
How to treat upper lip lines
Lip lines can be treated with a range of options, many of which require no recovery time and can be delivered by our expert anti-ageing team. Some patients consider lip fillers as a way to lessen the appearance of lip wrinkles. These lip treatments, using injectable filler in the lips, do work for some people. However, it doesn't work for others and there are alternative approaches that are much more effective and directly target the appearance of wrinkles. Here’s an overview of some of these treatments:
- Skincare products - As a preventative approach, you could include products within your skincare routine that are designed to slow the formation of wrinkles. Look out for key ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, amongst others that are vital for skin rejuvenation, collagen production and healthy skin overall!
- Chemical peels - These skin peels can be tailored to meet your needs. They are great for reducing the appearance of mouth wrinkles and tightening the skin. They are also effective for reducing dullness and increasing the production of collagen.
- Microneedling - This treatment is great for boosting the overall health of your skin, but it also makes an effective lip wrinkle treatment. Microneedling is clinically proven to help with fine lines and wrinkles, including upper lip wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, pigmentation and so much more.
- Anti-ageing injections - This treatment is great for targeting the vertical wrinkles on your upper lip. During the procedure, Botox can be injected into the specific facial muscles that are responsible for wrinkled skin. Our experts are trained to administer low-pain treatments to patients that have needle phobias.
