Your Guide to Skin Ageing: Part 1

26th February, 2021

Guide to Ageing

Here at Revolution Aesthetics, we’re experts in providing treatments that are designed to enhance your confidence without surgery. Many of our clients come to us to combat the effects of skin ageing, a natural process that occurs for all of us. However, many people know that there are two types of ageing - intrinsic and extrinsic. In this blog, we’ll discuss the signs of intrinsic skin ageing and how to combat them, before discussing extrinsic skin ageing in a part two edition of this blog, coming soon!

What is intrinsic skin ageing?

It is natural for our skin to age, and intrinsic ageing is the name given to this natural, chronological process that is often determined by genetics. Every person will experience intrinsic skin ageing - over time, our vital organs, cells and tissues will naturally deteriorate. However, many of these changes are not visible as they happen internally. Whether we like it or not though, intrinsic skin ageing is entirely visible because skin is an external organ. As a result of intrinsic skin ageing, our collagen production decreases, we experience a loss of elasticity and our skin cells are also affected. The production of new skin cells doesn’t happen as often or as quickly, and dead skin cells do not shed as quickly as they used to.

There can be various signs of skin ageing intrinsically. The most common signs of intrinsic ageing are the appearance of lines and wrinkles, thinner sagging skin on the face, jowls and neck and a dry skin texture. The most common lines are:

  • Crow’s feet - these are the little lines that appear from the corners of your eyes. They develop as you age due to facial contractions that happen when you make an expression and use the muscles in your face.
  • Frown lines - these are vertical lines that are visible between the eyebrows and the nose. They are most visible when you frown, due to the contracting facial muscles in this area.
  • Smile lines - these can often be called laughter lines. These wrinkles are more noticeable when you laugh, and typically appear around the mouth. They can also appear around your eyes.
  • Marionette wrinkles - these lines can cause sagging in the lower part of your face, and appear vertically between the chin and the mouth.

Whilst the signs of intrinsic ageing are inevitable, they can be worsened by your lifestyle choices. Smoking, a poor diet and unprotected sun exposure and exposure to UVB light - which is also a cause of skin cancer known as melanoma - are all classic causes of extrinsic ageing that can cause skin damage, which will be discussed in our next blog. However, it’s worth noting that extrinsic ageing - caused by these lifestyle choices - can worsen the effects of intrinsic ageing.

How to minimise the signs of intrinsic skin ageing

Whilst the process is inevitable, the good news is that you can minimise the effects and their visibility. By using preventative measures and making slight changes to your lifestyle, you can keep any major signs of ageing at bay. Using products and skin treatments that encourage the production of collagen is beneficial as it increases skin elasticity. Eating good, natural foods that are packed with antioxidants and vitamins is also a great way to maintain healthy, smoother skin over time. Besides maintaining a good diet, drinking plenty of water is also another incredibly easy way to keep your skin hydrated and plump.

Whilst these methods are great for improving your health overall too, our patients often come to us to help minimise the effects of chronological ageing. We have a range of non-surgical anti-ageing treatments to minimise the visible signs of skin ageing, designed for all skin types, all of which are carried out by highly-qualified medical and dental professionals. The treatments on offer include our anti-ageing skincare including ZO skin peels as well as skincare you can carry out at home. We also offer non-surgical anti-wrinkle injections that are designed to minimise the appearance of wrinkles and dermal filler treatments to soften and plump the skin. Other popular treatments include SuneKOS and our 8-point facelift. All of our treatments are designed to give you a healthy, radiant glow whilst boosting your confidence and maintaining a natural, youthful appearance.
