How Do Thread lifts Work?

How Do Thread Lifts Work?

The ageing process is, sadly, unavoidable. Over time, our skin in the face and neck naturally loses the fullness and elasticity of our youth and becomes loose and saggy. Wrinkles and fine lines also set in, marking the passage of time.

Unfortunately, this is simple science. As we age, our body produces less collagen, which is the protein responsible for keeping our skin strong, supple and healthy. What’s more, we naturally lose facial fat -- particularly in the cheeks, mouth, jawline, chin and under-eye areas -- which makes our skin more prone to dreaded droopiness.

Without a little help, it can be hard to avoid ending up with tired, aged and uneven skin. Surgical facelifts have long been a solution for the rich and famous, but the procedure is expensive, invasive and risky.

For those who don’t want to (or can’t afford to) commit to such a big operation, a thread lift offers a safe, affordable and non-invasive alternative that still delivers results.

What is a thread lift?

A thread lift is a non-surgical procedure designed to combat the signs of ageing in the face and neck areas by lifting and tightening the skin, making it look younger, smoother and healthier.

Dissolvable PDO (Polydioxanone) threads are safely inserted underneath the skin and are then tightened and pulled back, re-suspending areas that are sagging. This gives the skin a lifted, boosted and rejuvenated appearance.

Thread lifts can be used to treat any part of the face, including the forehead, cheeks, jowls, eyebrows, jawline and neck. The treatment is ideal for patients aged 30 to 50 who are experiencing mild to moderate signs of loose skin.

Patients who are not suitable for surgery due to medical conditions can get a thread lift because the procedure involves local anaesthetic as opposed to general anaesthetic.

A thread lift is a quick, effective and pain-free treatment that delivers immediate results.

How Does A Thread Lift Work?

We’ve briefly discussed how thread lifts work. But if you’re still unsure if the treatment’s right for you, here’s a step-by-step guide outlining exactly what happens during a thread lift procedure:

  • Your practitioner identifies the areas of sagging skin and marks out where each thread will be placed.
  • Local anaesthetic is applied to the treatment areas to make it a comfortable, pain-free experience.
  • Your practitioner inserts PDO (Polydioxanone) threads underneath your skin using a cannula. These threads are very fine and have small, cone-like structures running along their length.
  • The threads are shaped and moulded into place before being pulled back and tightened. The cone-like structures latch onto skin tissue and re-suspend sagging areas.
  • The threads are then trimmed to ensure they’re secure and invisible inside the skin.

A thread lift procedure usually takes between 30 and 45 mins. There’s little to no downtime, meaning you can return to work and your daily activities right away. There are also minimal side effects involved, aside from mild tenderness, swelling and bruising which should subside after a day or two.

Once your thread lift procedure is complete, you’ll see immediate results. Thanks to the subtle but physical “lift” that the PDO threads provide, you’ll leave the clinic with your skin looking tighter, smoother and younger. Once everything settles down, you can expect to see final results in 10 to 14 days after the procedure.

Another benefit of thread lifts is how the treatment delivers ongoing results. The body reacts to the PDO threads as if they were an “injury,” which kickstarts its natural healing process. Don’t worry, this is totally normal and safe -- it’s just the body’s way of responding to a forgein object underneath the skin.

As part of this healing process, the body reactivates its production of collagen and directs large amounts of it to the treated areas. Collagen is the protein responsible for keeping the skin strong, supple and healthy. Unfortunately, our bodies produce less and less collagen as we age.

Infusing the skin with collagen helps to rejuvenate and restore its tone, firmness and appearance while combating the signs of ageing.

The results from thread lifts can last up to 18 months in total. The PDO threads remain in place for 6 to 12 months before they dissolve, depending on the patient’s age, skin type, metabolism and lifestyle. After this point, the skin’s collagen-producing healing process lasts for another 6 months on average.

Thanks to their safe, non-invasive nature and use of dissolvable sutures, repeat thread lift treatments can be made if necessary.
